  • The 10 Best Jack Stands

    1. Pro-LifT T-6906D Double Pin Jack Stand – Best Overall

Pro-LifT T-6906D Double Pin Jack Stand

Our pick for the best jack stand overall, the Pro-LifT T-6906D, offers a great mix of performance and affordability, which is why they’re at the top of our list. For the price, you’ll get a single heavy-duty jack stand constructed from stamped steel that offers a 6-ton weight capacity. The only drawback is that you have to purchase two to make a pair.

Adding to the strength of these jack stands are the reinforced bottom corners. Better still, these offer double-locking mechanisms. Not only do the handles lock, but there are locking pins for you to use as well, providing dual-layered protection for when you’re under a vehicle. Thanks to a maximum height of 23.5 inches, these stands are tall enough for use with high-clearance vehicles like trucks.

Fantastic build quality and double safety measures have helped these jack stands earn the top spot of our list, and we’re confident they won’t let you down.

    Pros
    • Constructed of stamped steel
    • 6-ton capacity
    • Double-locking mechanisms
    • Max height of 23.5”
    • Reinforced bottom corners
    Cons
    • The handle caps fell off and got lost

    2. BIG RED T43002A Torin Steel Jack Stands – Best Value

Big Red T43002A Torin Steel Jack Stands

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get quality products. That doesn’t mean that every inexpensive product is worth purchasing, but the BIG RED T43002A Torin steel jack stands are a product we can comfortably get behind, or underneath. They’re safe, stable, and affordable, which is why we think they’re the best jack stands for the money.

With a minimum height of 11.25 inches, these stands are a great fit for cars. However, they’re a bit too small for trucks and some SUVs with a maximum height of 16.75 inches. They also have a total weight capacity of 3 tons for the pair, so large vehicles are ruled out, though they are available in a 6-ton capacity version.

Still, these are excellent jack stands for working with a car. They feature a ratcheting support bar for fast and easy height adjustment. Furthermore, locking support pins are also included, providing a second layer of safety. They may be affordable, but the performance you’ll get from these jack stands is anything but cheap.

    Pros
    • Affordably priced for the pair
    • Minimum height of 11.25”
    • Includes locking support pins
    Cons
    • Maximum height of 16.75”

    3. K Tool International 22 Ton Jack Stands – Premium Choice

K Tool International 22 Ton Jack Stands

With so many excellent jack stands on the market, it’s hard to definitively say that any pair is best. However, if we had to put money down, we’d probably place our bets on the K Tool International 22-ton jack stands. We’ve tested a lot of robust, heavy-duty jack stands, but none of them feel as sturdy as these.

Let’s start with the insane weight capacity of 22 tons for the pair. That’s many times the capacity of the other jack stands we tested, providing incredible peace of mind when you’re relying on them to hold up a vehicle that could crush you. Each of these jack stands weighs over 30 pounds; a testament to their truly heavy-duty build quality.

For further safety, the locking pins on these jack stands are incredibly thick. They’ll make you feel safe just looking at them. At full height, these stands are just about 20 inches, so they’re great for trucks and large vehicles. Granted, these are pretty pricey jack stands, but can you really put a price on your life?

    Pros
    • Capacity of 22 tons
    • Super thick locking pins
    • Each jack stand weighs more than 30 pounds
    • Sold as a pair
    • Maximum height just below 20”
    Cons
    • They’re far pricier than other jack stands

    4. Hein-Werner HW93506 Jack Stands

    Hein-Werner HW93506 Jack Stands

This pair of jack stands from Hein-Werner is radically expensive compared to many of the other jack stands that we’ve tested. Despite the incredibly high price, they lack the double safety of locking support pins, which is why they missed our top three. Still, they’re excellent jack stands that we’d recommend if they were cheaper or offered locking pins.

One great feature of these stands is their maximum height of 25.75 inches, giving them one of the highest reaches of any standard-sized jack stands we’ve seen. Between the pair, you get a weight capacity of 6 tons; plenty for supporting even large vehicles like trucks.

The pair weighs more than 40 pounds, showing just how heavy-duty they are. On top, the supports are extra-wide for lifting up large frames and preventing damage. The bases are also wide, 10.5” x 13”, which makes these stands more stable than others.

    Pros
    • Max height of 25.75”
    • Comes as a set of 2
    • 6-ton capacity
    • Extra-wide support
    • Wide base for extra stability
    • Weighs more than 40 pounds
    Cons
    • Wildly expensive pricing
    • No locking support pins

    5. Esco 10498 Jack Stand

    Esco 10498 Jack Stand

When it comes to jack stands, strength and stability are key. The Esco 10498 jack stand might not be affordably priced, but it’s definitely strong and stable. This stand uses a thick safety pin to set the height, and even utilizes a locking linchpin for a second layer of safety. Unfortunately, there’s no ratcheting support beam, so adjusting the height is a bit slower than other stands.

One feature of this stand that we’d like to see on other stands is the rubber saddle on the top that protects the underside of your vehicle from damage. You’ll also notice that this stand has just 3 feet instead of 4, like with most jack stands. Each foot has a circular base pad, increasing this stand’s stability by putting more surface area on the ground.

You only get one stand for the price, and it’s more costly than many pairs we’ve tested. At least each stand offers a 3-ton weight capacity, showing impressive strength. They’ve also got a maximum height of 21 inches, providing plenty of room for working under your vehicle. And as a finish measure, they’re even coated to prevent rust and corrosion.

    Pros
    • Uses a safety pin with locking linchpin
    • 3-ton capacity for a single stand
    • Rubber saddle to protect your vehicle
    • Circular base pads for stability
    • Coated finish prevents rust
    • Max height of 21 inches
    Cons
    • Comes with only a single stand
    • Expensive
    • Non-ratcheting design takes longer to set

    6. Performance Tool W41022 Jack Stand

    Performance Tool W41022 Jack Stand

These jack stands from Performance Tool offer adequate performance at a reasonable price. There’s really nothing special about these stands that sets them apart from the multitudes of other options on the market. But there’s also no glaring drawbacks that immediately discount them from purchase.

For the price, you’ll get two jack stands with a combined weight capacity of 3 tons. That’s not enough for working with trucks, vans, and many SUVs, though the limited maximum height of 16.75 inches already means that these are poorly suited for such vehicles. The pair weighs about 30 pounds, so they’ve got enough weight to make them feel very solid.

With a minimum height of 11.25 inches, you can easily get these under any car. They’ll even work with lowered vehicles once you get them jacked up a bit. The bases are about 8 inches in each direction, so they’re not as wide and stable as some options. But for the price, they offer solid performance.

    Pros
    • Affordable pricing for a pair
    • The pair weighs about 30 pounds
    Cons
    • 3-ton capacity between two jack stands
    • Maximum height of 16.75”

    7. Omega 32066 Magic Lift Black Jack Stand

Omega 32066 Magic Lift Black Jack Stand

The Omega 32066 Magic Lift Black jack stands are almost a novelty. They’re pretty cool for what they can do, but it also prices them out of most people’s budget. You can get great jack stands for a fraction of the price these go for. So, what are you paying for? Well, these stands feature a gas spring that automatically extends the support bar to the correct height. It’s a pretty nifty and time-saving feature, though the gas springs can also go bad, rendering the jack stand… normal.

These jack stands have an impressive max height of 24.375 inches and a minimum height of 15.75 inches, so they’re good for use with a variety of vehicles. The pair has a combined weight capacity of 6 tons, which is adequate for most uses.

Still, aside from the “magic” auto-raising support bar, these stands don’t offer anything special. There aren’t even locking support pins, which is a feature we’d really appreciate on such a pricey pair of jack stands.

    Pros
    • Gas spring automatically lifts to the desired height
    • Max height of 24.375”
    • 6-ton capacity for the pair
    Cons
    • Very expensive for a pair of jack stands
    • The gas springs can go bad
    • No locking support pins

    8. AmazonBasics Steel Jack Auto Stands

    AmazonBasics Steel Jack Auto Stands

AmazonBasics generally makes quality products that sell for affordable prices. We’ve had great luck with many of their offerings in the past, but these steel jack auto stands are a fail. They come in a pair and they’re priced dirt-cheap, so many people will be attracted to them for that reason alone. They look nice and they feature rust-proof coated frames, so you can’t tell right away that they offer inferior quality.

Let’s start with the weight capacity. Two tons for the pair is pretty weak, but will still work with many small cars. But these jack stands aren’t well built. One of ours cracked right down the middle of a side, underneath the sticker. Once we noticed the crack, we inspected them much closer. That’s when we saw the poor quality of the welds. They’re a mess with little gaps and pinholes that don’t instill any confidence in the strength of these stands.

We always prefer to see locking pins for added safety. On cheap stands with sub-par build-quality, they become even more important. But these stands are sorely missing locking pins or anything that makes us feel safe underneath them, which is why we can’t recommend them.

    Pros
    • Dirt-cheap pricing for a pair of jack stands
    • Rust-proof coated frames
    Cons
    • 2-ton capacity for the pair
    • No locking pins for added safety
    • Weak construction leads to breakage
    • Sub-par welds

    9. BIG RED T43004 Torin Aluminum Jack Stands

    BIG RED T43004

It’s somewhat ironic for a company to make one product that tops our list and another at the bottom, but the BIG RED T43004 Torin aluminum jack stands were quite a disappointment. They do have some nice features though. We like the removable bases that make them very compact for storage. With a minimum height of 10.75 inches, you can get these under any vehicle. But with a max height of under 16 inches, you’re not going to get any vehicle lifted very high.

Though we liked the removable bases when it’s time to store these stands, we don’t like them any other time. They’re far too narrow, which doesn’t offer enough stability. The pair only has a 3-ton capacity between them, so there’s not much room for error here.

Despite the flaws inherent in these jack stands, they’re pretty darn pricey. You can get two pairs of quality jack stands for the price, and they’ll probably offer superior performance. We don’t think these are great jack stands by any measure, and we certainly won’t be trusting them to hold thousands of pounds while we’re underneath.

    Pros
    • Removable bases make for compact storage
    • Minimum height of 10.75”
    Cons
    • Very expensive compared to other jack stands
    • Max height of 15.675”
    • Narrow bases don’t offer much stability
    • 3-ton capacity for the pair

    10. CARTMAN JA110704 Jack Stands

    CARTMAN JA110704 Jack Stands

When it comes to these CARTMAN jack stands, aside from their affordable pricing, we can’t find much good to say about them.

You’ll get a pair in your purchase. Between them, they have a max capacity of 3 tons. At full extension, they only reach 16.5 inches. The smallest they go is 11 inches. While these numbers are far from impressive, we could work with them if it weren’t for shoddy build quality.

Taking a look at the welds on these jack stands really instills fear in you. They’re messy and look like they were performed by a beginner. Worse, there are numerous holes spread throughout the welds.

With such unsafe build quality, we’d sure hope to see some safety pins, but of course, there are none. We really can’t find many good things to say about these jack stands.

    Pros
    • Priced affordably
    Cons
    • 3-ton capacity for the pair
    • Max height of 16.5 inches
    • There are holes in the welds
    • No safety pins

Buyer’s Guide – Finding the Best Jack Stand

Jack stands perform an invaluable job. If they fail, it could result in your death. With so much on the line, you don’t want to take the chance of purchasing a poor-performing product. It could literally be the worst decision you ever make. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to choose a jackstand to trust your life with. So, we’ve put together this short buyer’s guide to help you prioritize the most important points.

The Three S’s of Jack Stands

When it comes to jack stands, there are three most important traits to consider: the three S’s. Strength, stability, and safety are the most important aspects of any jack stand. Let’s take a look at each so you can use them to help you pick the right pair.

    Safety

Safety is of paramount concern when discussing jack stands. If the stand doesn’t keep you safe, then what good is it?

Of course, all of these devices are supposed to be safe. But people have still died under them.

Look for jack stands with extra safety measures in place. Double-locking mechanisms are always a plus. But for us, the best safety feature is a set of locking pins, especially if the jack stand also has a ratcheting support arm with a locking mechanism of its own. Something about placing a steel pin through a locking hole just makes us feel safer and more secure.

    Strength

Strength starts with weight capacity and continues on to build quality.

Jack stands have a rated weight they can safely carry. They’re usually rated by the pair, though some are rated individually. As such, you must take care to ensure that you’re reading the ratings properly.

For cars and other small vehicles, a 3-ton weight capacity should suffice. Larger vehicles will need 6 tons or more.

You also want to consider build quality. A stand might be rated to hold a certain weight, but if there’s a failure in the device, then it’s not going to live up to that expectation.

You can check the welds, the finish, and the weight of a jack stand to get a feel for its build quality. Heavy jack stands are made up of a lot of metal, so it stands to reason that they’re stronger. Clean, solid welds are naturally going to perform better than messy welds with holes in them.

using Omega 32066 Magic Lift Black Jack Stand

    Stability

Stability is similar to strength, though it’s more about balance. We’ve seen some jack stands that seem strong, but they’re not stable. Most often, this is due to narrow bases or limited contact with the floor.

When looking for a stable jack stand, you want something with a very wide base. We’ve seen bases of just 7 or 8 inches wide. These might work, but they’re never going to be as stable as a stand with a 13-inch wide base.

Also, consider how much material is touching the floor. If only the edges of your jack stands are contacting the ground, then they’re losing a lot of stability. Other stands have extra contact patches welded into the corners or might even feature feet with individual bases for improved stability.

    Conclusion

There were a lot of great jack stands for us to test while making this list of reviews. Luckily, we had plenty of repairs and upgrades to perform, so we were granted many opportunities to put these tools to the test. After all was said and done, we settled on three pairs that earned our recommendations through solid performance and safety.

Our pick of the best jack stand for most situations is the Pro-LifT T-6906D jack stand. This rugged stand is made from stamped steel with double-locking mechanisms, safety pins, and reinforced bottom corners for a truly heavy-duty safety device. And with a max height of 23.5 inches, you’ll have no problem getting under your vehicle to work.

If you’re on a budget, we recommend the BIG RED T43002A Torin steel jack stands. This pair of stands is priced affordably and features ratcheting support beams plus locking support pins for double the peace of mind.

And if money is no issue, then we’d go with the K Tool International jack stands. These are the strongest stands we’ve seen with a capacity of 22 tons and incredibly thick locking pins. Each stand weighs over 30 pounds and reaches a maximum height of nearly 20 inches.
