  • The 10 Best Alkaline Water Brands

    1. Icelandic Glacial Natural Spring Alkaline Water – Best Overall

Icelandic Glacial Natural Spring Alkaline Water

There’s no shortage of alkaline water brands selling their products on the market. But out of all the options, our pick for the best alkaline water goes to Icelandic Glacial Natural Spring. This water is naturally alkaline, instead of being processed to make the water alkaline through non-natural means. It has a pH level of 8.4, which is well above neutral.

However, through a few shipments, we did discover a couple of bottles that didn’t meet the advertised alkalinity. Most likely, it’s due to sitting in the warehouse, where the alkalinity of water can begin to drop.

We found the Icelandic Glacial water to be delicious. It was refreshing and had a fresh, crisp taste that all of our testers enjoyed. But if you aren’t a big fan of plain water, you can even get this water in several different flavors, including Tahitian Lime, Sicilian Lemon, and Elderflower.

Unlike some alkaline water brands, Icelandic Glacial water is certified carbon neutral. Nothing is added to this water, and nothing is taken away. It’s sourced from the Olfus spring in Iceland, which is probably why it has such an endearing taste.

    Pros
    • Naturally alkaline
    • Has a pH level of 8.4
    • Available in several flavors
    • Certified carbon neutral
    Cons
    • Not all bottles test to the advertised alkalinity

    2. Perfect Hydration 9.5+ pH Alkaline Water – Best Value

    Perfect Hydration 9.5

One of the biggest issues we have with most alkaline water brands is the exorbitant price they’re charging for bottled water. But the Perfect Hydration Alkaline Water is a more affordable option. It offers exceptional value for the price, which is why we think Perfect Hydration is one of the best alkaline water brands for the money.

The pH levels of different alkaline waters vary drastically, but this water from Perfect Hydration is near the top of the list with a pH of 9.5 or higher. Many alkaline waters are only slightly alkaline, but with the Perfect Hydration alkaline water, you’ll be getting the full benefits of drinking truly alkaline water.

This water contains no harmful additives, such as chlorine, fluorine, or sodium. However, helpful minerals and electrolytes have been added for enhanced flavor and health-boosting effects. Unfortunately, some of our testers still thought the water had a plastic taste to it. But with a nine-stage filtration process, you can rest assured that there’s nothing harmful in Perfect Hydration alkaline water.

    Pros
    • Purified through nine stages of filtration
    • Contains no sodium, fluorine, or chlorine
    • Added minerals and electrolytes
    • Has a pH of 9.5 or higher
    • Certified kosher
    Cons
    • Some people taste plastic in the water

    3. Evamor Natural Alkaline Artesian Water – Premium Choice

    Evamor Natural Alkaline Artesian Water

Compared to regular drinking water, all alkaline water seems pretty pricey. But the Evamor Natural Alkaline Artesian Water even makes other alkaline waters look affordable. It’s one of the most expensive options we tested, but offers a fresh taste with a highly alkaline pH rating of 8.8–9.1.

Plastic bottles are a great way to store water, except that they can leach harmful chemicals into the beverage you’re about to drink. Luckily, the bottles that Evamor artesian alkaline water is packaged in are completely BPA-free, making them safe and healthy for you to drink from.

This alkaline water is often recommended by doctors and those touting the benefits of alkaline water. Unlike many other alkaline waters, this one is naturally alkaline, which means they didn’t have to process it to alter the pH. Evamor alkaline water comes from a protected domestic artesian aquifer, which contributes to the fresh, smooth flavor.

    Pros
    • pH of 8.8–9.1
    • Packaged in BPA-free bottles
    • Crisp and refreshing taste
    Cons
    • Far pricier than most alkaline water

    4. BODYARMOR SportWater Alkaline Water

    BODYARMOR SportWater Alkaline Water

With pH levels of 9 or higher, BODYARMOR SportWater is more alkaline than much of the competition. It’s available in large bottles of 23.6 or 33.8 fluid ounces, offering several eight-ounce servings per bottle. Even though it’s got higher alkalinity than many waters that we’re comparing it against, the BODYARMOR SportWater has a much lower price. In fact, it’s one of the most affordable alkaline waters we’ve tested.

Unfortunately, this water isn’t naturally alkaline. Instead, it’s prepared by reverse osmosis and enhanced with electrolytes. Still, it tastes good and offers a high pH reading. We also like the sport cap that features an easy flip-up lid. However, it doesn’t seal as well as other lids, so some bottles arrive with broken seals, causing them to leak and waste expensive alkaline water.

    Pros
    • pH levels of 9 or higher
    • Sport cap with easy flip lid
    • Water is prepared by RO
    • Contains added electrolytes
    • Priced more affordably than many brands
    Cons
    • Many bottles arrive with broken seals

    5. Alkaline88 Alkaline Water

    Alkaline88

If you’re shopping for the lowest-priced alkaline water brand and you’re not basing your decision on any other factors, then the Alkaline88 alkaline water will probably seem pretty attractive. As far as alkaline water brands go, it’s one of the most affordable. Despite the low price, it’s still packaged in BPA-free bottles, so you don’t have to worry about ingesting harmful plastics. That said, the water does have a plastic or metallic taste at times; not every bottle, but we did experience it in some.

This water has an alkaline pH of 8.8 and is purified using reverse osmosis. Furthermore, it’s enhanced with Himalayan sea salt and includes vital electrolytes and minerals including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Unlike many similar products, you can get Alkaline88 in gallon form, which is more convenient for those who plan to drink alkaline water on a daily basis.

    Pros
    • One of the most affordable alkaline waters
    • Packaged in BPA-free bottles
    • Includes calcium, copper, potassium, iron, and magnesium
    • Has an alkalinity of 8.8 pH
    • Enhanced with Himalayan sea salt
    Cons
    • Sometimes the water has a plastic or metallic taste

    6. Essentia Water Ionized Alkaline Bottled Water

    Essentia Water

Essentia is one of the more well-known names when it comes to alkaline water. Their water is ionized and features a pH of 9.5 or higher, so if you’re looking for highly alkaline water, Essentia is definitely an option. This water is very pure, containing less than 90 parts per million of total dissolved solids on average. Because of this, pH testing strips cause incorrect readings. With a proper pH meter, we found this water to be as alkaline as advertised.

While many of the best alkaline waters are sourced naturally, Essentia comes from municipal water supplies, which means it is essentially glorified tap water. Granted, they do process it to increase the alkalinity. In the process, electrolytes are also added to improve the taste. Still, it’s pretty expensive considering that it comes from the same place your tap water comes from.

    Pros
    • pH of 9.5 or higher
    • Added electrolytes for taste
    • Contains less than 90ppm of TDS
    Cons
    • It comes from municipal water sources

    7. smartwater Alkaline 9+ph Water

    smartwater Alkaline

If there’s only one water on this list that you’ve seen before, it’s most likely smartwater. This brand has bottles in many major convenience stores, though you can’t necessarily get their alkaline water everywhere that smartwater products are sold. The smartwater alkaline water brand has a high pH of 9 or higher. It’s vapor distilled for purity and electrolytes are added for taste. To achieve a high pH value, this water is ionized.

One thing we really liked about the smartwater alkaline water is the bottles. They’re large enough to hold four standard servings of water, so you only need to drink two bottles per day for adequate hydration. Even better, the bottles are BPA-free, making them completely safe for the drinker.

However, we were disappointed to find out that water is not free from fluoride. We were also disappointed after doing some home testing. After several tests, we determined that this water isn’t always as alkaline as advertised.

    Pros
    • Alkalinity of 9 pH or higher
    • Vapor distilled with added electrolytes
    • Large bottles hold four servings each
    • The plastic bottles are BPA free
    Cons
    • Not fluoride-free
    • Doesn’t show a high pH in home testing

    8.  JUST Water Pure Still Spring Water

    JUST Water

JUST Water Pure Still Spring Water has a few things going for it, but they’re not related to the quality or alkalinity of the water. Rather, JUST Water is mainly reliant on its paper-based recyclable bottles and celebrity endorsements. The idea for this water comes from Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s son, and is endorsed by celebrities like Queen Latifah.

Because the bottle is made from paper and contains 88% renewable materials, JUST Water offers a reduced carbon footprint compared to other alkaline water brands. But the inside of the bottle is covered in foil, which gives it a noticeable chemical smell and taste.

While we are fans of reducing our impact on the environment, we’re not into the idea of wasting money. This is very expensive water, but it’s sourced from the same water that supplies New York City. With a pH of 8.0, the water isn’t even very alkaline—so you’re paying mainly for the packaging. We should all do our part to reduce our carbon footprints, but JUST Water is one of the most expensive ways of doing that.

    Pros
    • pH of 8.0
    • Paper-based recyclable bottle
    • Reduced carbon footprint
    • 88% renewable materials
    Cons
    • Only popular because of celebrity endorsements
    • Pricey for alkaline water
    • Inside of the bottles has a chemical smell

    9. Bai Antioxidant Alkaline Water

    Bai Antioxidant Water

Second to last on our list of the best alkaline water brands is Bai, which produces a line of flavored drinks that you’ve likely seen in local convenience stores. Their antioxidant alkaline water is one of the more expensive alkaline waters we’ve tested, even though its pH is just 7.5—barely above neutral. You might expect this to mean that this Bai water has a more natural taste, but that’s not the case. Actually, the taste of this water is slightly bitter, and our testers weren’t particularly thrilled by it.

Electrolytes were added to Bai antioxidant alkaline water to enhance its flavor. Plus, it’s infused with selenium. It’s also non-GMO, vegan, and kosher, but it seems kind of ridiculous to list those things since it’s just water. Still, some people want to see those labels on their water. So, if that’s you, then Bai water might be what you’re looking for.

On the other hand, if you want an affordable and delicious alkaline water brand that’s got a pH significantly higher than neutral, we’d recommend that you steer clear of Bai antioxidant water and look somewhere else instead.

    Pros
    • Infused with selenium
    • Vegan, kosher, and non-GMO
    Cons
    • Costlier than other options
    • The pH of 7.5 is barely above neutral
    • Has a slightly bitter taste

    10. Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water

    Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water

Unfortunately for Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water, there’s no prize for having the hardest name to pronounce. If there was, this water would top our list. As it is, it’s probably our least favorite choice out of all the alkaline waters we drank during our testing.

With a pH of just 8.2, this water isn’t very far to the alkaline side of the pH scale. Worse, there were visible particles floating in the water. Waiakea goes out of their way to convince you about how special their volcanically filtered water is, but it’s actually sourced from the municipal supply system, meaning that it’s really just tap water.

Of course, Waiakea has enhanced the water with minerals and electrolytes, though that’s likely what causes this water to have a metallic aftertaste. Still, it is carbon neutral certified and the bottles are made from recycled materials.

Our favorite thing about this water is that Waiakea donates clean water to Africa with each purchase made. That’s pretty philanthropic for a major company, but as far as alkaline drinking water is concerned, this one didn’t appeal to any of our testers.

    Pros
    • Carbon neutral certified
    • Bottles are made from recycled materials
    • Waiakea donates clean water to Africa for each purchase
    Cons
    • Doesn’t reflect the advertised pH in home testing
    • Waiakea water is bottled from the municipal supply system
    • Has a metallic aftertaste
    • There are visible particles floating in the water
    • 2 pH isn’t as high as other alkaline waters

Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Alkaline Water

If you know that you want to drink alkaline water, the biggest problem you have left to face is deciding which of the alkaline water brands is right for you. Each brand claims to offer the most refreshing water with the best benefits, but we all know that advertising can’t always be trusted. That’s why we put each of these waters to the test. Along the way, we figured out the best ways to compare these waters.

In this short buyer’s guide, we’re going to share what we’ve learned so that you can compare alkaline waters and make up your own mind about which is the best choice for you.

Picking the Perfect Alkaline Water Brand

Water is water, right? Well, not when you’re talking about drinking it. When it comes to alkaline water, the number one thing to think about is the pH of the water. Let’s take a closer look at pH, water, and what numbers you should be looking for.

    The pH Scale

The pH scale is a way to measure acidity. It spans from 0–14, with higher numbers being more alkaline and lower numbers being more acidic. Seven is neutral. For water to be considered alkaline, it must have a pH that’s higher than seven.

    Your Natural pH

Your body is naturally slightly alkaline, but only slightly. Remember, seven is neutral on the pH scale. Anything higher than seven is alkaline. The human body has a very tight pH range of 7.35–7.45 that it must maintain for survival.

    pH of Your Water

If you want your water to increase the alkalinity of your body, then you need to drink water that’s more alkaline than your body is, and certainly more alkaline than neutral. As such, you should be looking for water that’s got a pH level of no lower than 7.5. Of course, higher pH numbers indicate that a water is more alkaline and should provide more of the effects you’re looking for.

    Electrolytes

Alkaline water must include alkaline minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. What’s special about these minerals is that they’re all electrolytes. But the way that different alkaline water brands incorporate these electrolytes can tell you a lot about the water.

    BODYARMOR SportWater Alkaline Water 2

The best alkaline waters are naturally alkaline. This means they come from sources that have high levels of alkaline minerals naturally, plus a high pH rating. Other waters are made alkaline artificially—by adding electrolytes and often ionizing the water. Alkaline water that’s made this way has been heavily processed to make it alkaline.

    Benefits of Alkaline Water

There are many purported benefits of alkaline water, though most of them haven’t been proven. Some people claim that increasing the alkalinity of your body will kill cancer, but there hasn’t been any definitive proof of this. However, there have been studies that show some benefits of alkaline water for certain populations.

A study performed in 2012 and published on Pub Med showed that alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 can help deactivate pepsin, helping to relieve the symptoms associated with acid reflux.

Another study showed that drinking water with a high pH after a strenuous workout could reduce blood viscosity compared to drinking water with a neutral pH. This results in more efficient blood flow, increasing oxygen delivery and aiding in recovery.

    Possible Risks of Alkaline Water

Though there might be some positive benefits associated with the intake of alkaline water, there are also some possible side effects that have been shown to exist. Since alkaline water has a high pH, it lowers the natural acidity of your stomach. That acidity is what kills bacteria and pathogens, preventing them from entering your bloodstream. Without the natural barrier of your stomach’s high acidity, bacteria and pathogens might survive your stomach and make it into your bloodstream.

If your body becomes too alkaline, you might experience gastrointestinal issues. Skin irritations might also occur. When your body is too alkaline for too long, metabolic alkalosis can set in, inducing nausea, tremors, muscle twitches, confusion, and vomiting.

Remember, your body is an advanced organism that has ancient systems in place to maintain homeostasis. When you alter your body, such as trying to change its pH, those systems will fight back and do whatever it takes to get your body back to a neutral pH.

    In Conclusion

If you’ve only recently started looking into alkaline water, you might be surprised to see just how many companies are producing it. While most of us prefer to have more choices rather than fewer, having so many options to pick from can make it needlessly complicated to pick what water we want to drink. Hopefully, our reviews have helped you make an informed decision without having to purchase a dozen different alkaline waters. But we’re going to leave you with our recommendations just in case.

Of all the available ones we tested, our pick for the best alkaline water was the Icelandic Glacial Natural Spring Alkaline Water. It’s naturally alkaline, with a pH level of 8.4. Moreover, it’s certified carbon neutral and is even available in several flavors.

One of the most affordable options, Perfect Hydration 9.5+ pH Electrolyte Enhanced Drinking Water is our pick for best value. This water goes through nine stages of filtration and features added minerals and electrolytes, but no sodium, fluorine, or chlorine.

It’s pretty pricey, but if you’re looking for a pure alkaline water experience, we recommend Evamor Natural Alkaline Artesian Water. It comes in BPA-free bottles with a delicious flavor and a pH of 8.8–9.1.
