Strawberry Soil Requirements

The best soil type for strawberries is well-draining soil, rich with organic matter. Soil types which are ideal for strawberries are sandy, loamy, or even clay soil. Clay soil is beneficial for the growth of strawberries because it contains a lot of nutrients and retains water.

The pH of the soil which will serve for planting your strawberries should be between 5.5 and 6.9, which is slightly acidic. If your soil is neutral or alkaline, you can always make it more acidic. The best way to do so is by adding iron sulfate, aluminum sulfate, or ammonium sulfate.

When preparing your ground soil for strawberries, add 2 to 4 inches of decomposed compost, pine needles, or peat moss. This will benefit any soil. If your soil is sandy, the compost will help with water retention, and the organic matter will aerate it if it’s clay.

Growing Strawberries in the Ground

If you are thinking of growing strawberries in the ground, you need to plan to provide them with well-prepared soil to improve their fruit production. For this particular task, organic matter will do all the magic. It is excellent for improving the soil structure, providing nutrients, and retaining water. If the organic matter content is low in your garden soil, you can quickly improve that with a lot of animal manure, peat moss, and compost.

Growing Strawberries in a Pot

If you are thinking of planting strawberries in pots, start by finding the perfect-sized pot for your plant. The pot needs to be fairly large, with sufficient drainage holes. The best soil mix to use for potted strawberries is potting mix, compost, and aged cow manure. It is crucial to use aged manure when using cow manure, as fresh one can burn your plant’s roots.

The 5 Steps for Making Potting Soil for Strawberries

1. Gather All the Ingredients

Before you start with this project, it is crucial to gather all the materials you’ll need to make your own strawberry potting soil mix. For this project to end up flawless, you need to have:

  • Potting mix
  • Sand
  • Peat moss or coir
  • Perlite
  • Vermiculite
  • Compost
  • Large container

2. Choose the Right Pot

While growing strawberries in containers is entirely possible, success will depend solely on the type of pot you use. Strawberries need large pots with plenty of drainage holes on the bottom. The pots should be 8 to 12 inches in diameter. You can use pots from different types of materials, such as terra cotta, plastic pots, and wooden vegetable crates.

3. Create the Mix

Your ideal potting mix will contain ⅔ of standard potting soil and ⅓ of either compost, perlite, vermiculite, or aged cow manure. The potting soil can be regular multi-purpose soil as long as its pH is between 5.5 and 6.9. Fill the pot with potting mix only halfway and test its pH level. Make sure to leave half of the container empty so you have enough room for other ingredients.

4. Add the Rest of the Ingredients

Amend your regular potting mix with some slow-release fertilizer or compost. These amendments will add nutrients to the soil, help it retain moisture, and aerate it. If you choose to use multiple ingredients for that, make sure to mix them in equal parts. Once you add everything into the container, mix it thoroughly with your hand or a small gardening tool.

5. Plant Your Strawberries

Whether you decide to plant your strawberries in the ground or a container, it would be best to do so in early spring. This will ensure your strawberry’s roots are strong and well-established for the following winter. If you live in an area with mild winters, you can plant strawberries during fall.
