To calculate how much electricity your space heater uses, find out your space heater’s wattage. You’ll find the appliance’s wattage on the space heater itself or the instructions manual your device comes with.
The wattage is the amount of electricity that powers and operates your space heater. Many space heaters use 1,500 watts. Ensure you always check before purchasing.
Once you find your appliance’s wattage, multiply it by the number of hours it’ll run. Then, divide the number you get by 1,000. Multiply the figure you get by the kilowatt-hour rate your utility company charges. This final number will tell you the cost of running your space heater.
Monthly Average Cost of Electricity
The average cost of electricity when operating a space heater for one month varies by state. Since the wattage in many space heaters is 1,500 watts, we’ll calculate the average electricity cost based on this number.
Divide the wattage on your space heater by 1,000 to convert it to kilowatts. The electricity amount you use is calculated in kilowatt-hours. Assuming you keep the space heater running for 8 hours a day, multiply the kilowatts by the hours. This way, you’ll find out how much power your space heater uses daily. That comes to 12 kilowatts a day. If you use the heater every day for a whole month, it adds up to 360 kilowatts of power in one month.
The average rate of electricity in the US is 13.72 cents per kilowatt hour. So, the space heater will cost you $49.39 a month. You only need to change the cents to dollars by dividing by 100 and then multiplying the result by the kilowatts used in a month.
