It’s important to know how much appliances weigh before you move them. Some appliances can weigh hundreds of pounds. If you need to move a dryer, especially if you need to move one up or down stairs, you need to know how much it weighs. Attempting to move an appliance that weighs 300 pounds on your own won’t end well. You need to know if you need to call in backup before attempting to move any appliances, including a dryer.
How much does a dryer actually weigh? Less than you might think. The weight of an average dryer is just 125 lbs.
The Average Weight of a Dryer
Compact dryers can weigh as little as 100 lbs., depending on the configuration. The hardest part about moving a dryer is how bulky they are. In terms of weight, they are actually one of the lighter appliances.
If you are planning on buying a washer-dryer combination unit, the weight goes up considerably. The average weight of a washer-dryer combo is roughly 200 lbs. Washer-dryer combinations can weigh between 160 and 275 lbs. In many cases, washer-dryer combinations weigh less than a single washer and single dryer unit put together. This is due to being able to combine some processes.
Standard Dryer Weight Chart
Dryers have a fairly large range of weights that they can be. The lightest dryers weigh around 100 lbs. The heaviest dryers can weigh as much as 200 lbs. or more. The heaviest dryers are large and made from sturdier materials such as steel. The lightest dryers are usually compact or narrow and are made from lighter materials. Typical dryers weigh between 120 and 150 lbs. Not many dryers are heavier than 150 lbs. unless they are heavy-duty upright units. Typical front loaders usually weigh the average amount.
Generally, the larger the dryer, the heavier the unit. If you are planning on moving your dryer, be sure to disconnect everything. Dryers have a power cord and a dryer vent duct. Gas appliances also have a natural gas line and valve to detach.

Dryer Weight Compared to Other Appliances
How do dryers compare to other appliances, like a washing machine? Dryers are one of the lightest standard appliances found in a home. The only appliance that weighs less on average than the dryer is a dishwasher. Dryers and dishwashers are similar. They are both largely empty boxes. Dryers generate heat, and dishwashers bring in water, but neither has much else in terms of heavy equipment.
Refrigerators, ovens, and washing machines all weigh considerably more than dryers. Washers, on average, weigh roughly 50 lbs. more than dryers. Refrigerators are the heaviest standard appliance. They weigh hundreds of pounds on average and can weigh as much as 400 lbs. or even 500 lbs.
Appliance | Weight (Pounds) |
Dryer | 125 lbs. |
Washer | 170 lbs. |
Washer-Dryer Combo | 200 lbs. |
Refrigerator | 250 lbs. |
Oven | 175 lbs. |
Dishwasher | 75 lbs. |
Conclusion
In the grand scheme of things, dryers are one of the lightest appliances. They weigh just 125 lbs. on average, and some compact units can weigh just 100 lbs. That is considerably lighter than some similar appliances. You might still need help wrestling your dryer out of the laundry room because dryers are large and bulky, but they really aren’t all that heavy. Some dryers are heavier than others. Check to see if your dryer has a weight posted on the information panel usually found on the back of the unit or look up your make and model online for a more precise weight.
