  • The 9 Best Hydration Packs for a Spartan Race

    1. CamelBak Mil-Tac HydroBak Hydration Pack – Best Overall

The CamelBak Mil-Tac HydroBak Hydration Pack is our choice for best overall. This brand features quick-release shoulder straps, so it’s easy to get at when you need it. It uses a durable nylon material that is BPA free and abrasion-resistant, so it will not scuff or wear down from brushing up against your clothes or skin. It features an external zip pocket and has an external fill reservoir.  This pack is lightweight and has a low-profile. It’s perfect for smaller framed bodies.

We enjoyed using the CamelBak Mil-Tac HydroBak Hydration Pack while we were reviewing it. It’s more stable and out of the way than a lot of the others on this list. There were two minor problems that we had. The first problem is that there is not a lot of space to store anything you might need to date with you. The second problem is the rough material grabs at your fabrics and can be uncomfortable in a no-shirt running situation

    Pros
    • Quick-release shoulder straps
    • Perfect for small body frames
    • External zip pocket
    • Abrasion-resistant
    • BPA free
    • Lightweight
    • External fill reservoir
    • Low profile
    Cons
    • Small
    • Rough Material

    2. TETON Sports TrailRunner 2.0 Hydration Pack – Best Value

TETON Sports TrailRunner 2.0 Hydration Pack

The TETON Sports TrailRunner 2.0 Hydration Pack is our pick for the best value. We believe this is the best hydration pack for the Spartan race for the money. This brand features a large 2-liter bladder that can provide you with water for several hours, even during intense workouts. The opening is large enough to insert ice to help keep you and the fluid cool for longer. It’s very lightweight, and you will hardly notice it when it’s empty.

The biggest problem we had while we were reviewing the TETON Sports TrailRunner 2.0 Hydration Pack, was the bite valve. It was very challenging to use this valve and get a good amount of water out at a time, and it could get frustrating.

    Pros
    • 2-liter bladder
    • Kink free tube
    • Customizable for men women and children
    • Large opening for ice
    • Lightweight
    Cons
    • Bite Valve

    3. Salomon C10131 Hydration Stretch Pack – Premium Choice

    Salomon C10131 Hydration Stretch Pack

The Salomon C10131 Hydration Stretch Pack is our premium choice hydration pack. This pack is durably built and is 80% nylon and 20% elastane to help the pack form you your body and remain comfortable over long distances. Sternum straps also help hold the hydration packs closer to the body. There are multiple pockets for holding supplies, including a large expandable pocket in the back. This pack also includes essential safety features, including reflective stitching and detailing as well as a safety whistle built-in to the arm straps.

Besides the high cost, the only big problem we encountered while reviewing the Salomon C10131 Hydration Stretch Pack was that it is quite large. Some people with a smaller frame might find this model to be a little too large for comfort.

    Pros
    • Sternum straps
    • Multiple pockets
    • Reflective detailing
    • Durable nylon and elastic
    • Safety whistle
    Cons
    • Very large

    4. Mubasel Spartan Race Hydration Backpack

    Mubasel Gear Hydration Backpack

The Mubasel Gear Hydration Backpack can hold up to two-liers of fluid to keep you hydrated during the long Spartan race. The material is BPA-free and doesn’t contaminate your water or color the taste. It has a large opening suitable for inserting ice, and it doubles as a seat when resting. You can also use it as a pillow at night. Three large compartments are more than adequate for carrying all of your supplies.

The downsides we experienced while we were trying out the Mubasel Gear Hydration Backpack was that there are no instructions included. While the lack of instructions might not be a problem for most of us, first-time users might struggle with using the bite valve, as well as setting up the traps. The hose was hard to position and keep in place, and it could be a struggle to use while running. The opening is large enough to fit a scrub brush, but there are many places it doesn’t reach, making cleaning a challenge.

    Pros
    • Two-liter bladder
    • BPA free
    • Can use as a pillow
    • Lage opening
    • Three large compartments
    Cons
    • No instructions
    • Hard to position the hoses
    • Hard to clean

    5. MIRACOL HP-1015-BL Spartan Hydration Pack

    MIRACOL HP-1015-BL Hydration Backpack

The MIRACOL HP-1015-BL Hydration Backpack is another model with a two-liter bladder, and this one features thermal insulation to help keep your liquids cold for up to four hours at a time. It’s lightweight and durable and showed no signs of wear and tear after several uses. There are several large pockets for carrying your supplies, and it’s available in several colors.

The MIRACOL HP-1015-BL Hydration Backpack might have ranked higher on our list if we weren’t looking for good brands during the Spartan race. It’s a little too big for carrying with you during the Spartan race and could even work against you if you have a smaller frame body. We tried out two of these hydration backpacks, and one of them began leaking after a few uses.

    Pros
    • Thermal insulation
    • Durable
    • Lightweight
    • Available in several colors
    • Multiple pockets
    • Two-liter bladder
    Cons
    • Large
    • Leaks

    6. FREEMOVE Hydration Pack

    FREEMOVE Hydration Pack

The FREEMOVE Hydration Pack is a water-resistant pack that features a two-liter bladder, and it can keep your fluids cool for up to 5 hours. A built-in airflow system keeps you cool and helps prevent the pack from getting too sweaty. It uses a durable ripstop material that’s not only durable, but it also prevents tears from getting bigger over time. It’s fully adjustable and can form to any body style.

The FREEMOVE Hydration Pack is another that might be too large for many competitors in the Spartan race. It may make a fantastic training pack for some people, and if you have a larger frame, you may appreciate the extra room this pack provides. We also found that the hose tends to drip a few drops of fluid onto your belongings each time you take a drink, and the clamps that hold the hose secure on the shoulder strap is very flimsy and our broke after only a few uses.

    Pros
    • Airflow system
    • Two-liter bladder
    • Water-resistant
    • Durable ripstop material
    • Fully adjustable
    Cons
    • Large
    • Leaks
    • Flimsy hose clamp

    7. SHARKMOUTH Tactical MOLLE Hydration Pack

    SHARKMOUTH Tactical MOLLE Hydration Pack

The SHARKMOUTH Tactical MOLLE Hydration Pack is a lightweight pack that is available in many colors and patterns, including camouflage. It features a large two-liter bladder that will help keep you hydrated during your workout. The bladder is insulated and can keep your drinks cold for several hours, even in hot weather, and a large opening is big enough for ice. The bladder is BPA-free and produces no odor or taste, and a breathable mesh fabric helps keep your back cool as you use it.

We found the SHARKMOUTH Tactical MOLLE Hydration Pack hard to adjust as we tried to use it. It sits very low on your back and can get in the way as you run. The velcro that holds the bladder in place is crooked, and it makes the model seem cheap. Another problem we had with this brand was that the hose drips as you run.

    Pros
    • Lightweight
    • Large assortment of colors
    • Keeps back cool
    • Two-liter bladder
    • Insulated
    • Large opening
    Cons
    • Hard to adjust
    • Sits very low on your back
    • Velcro is misplaced
    • Drips from hose

    8. Nathan QuickStart Hydration Pack

    Nathan QuickStart Hydration Pack

The Nathan QuickStart Hydration Pack is a small but comfortable pack containing a 1.5-liter bladder. It has adjustable front and side straps to help you get a perfect fit. It’s incredibly lightweight and weighs less than half a pound when empty. There are also pockets for storing your belongings.

We were hoping that the smaller bladder size would make the Nathan QuickStart Hydration Pack sit better on smaller frame bodies, which it does to some extent, but when used on a smaller person, we found that the straps didn’t get tight enough. There are also no instructions letting you know how to release the tube from the bladder. The bleeder valve also tends to leak while you are running.

    Pros
    • 5-liter hydration bladder
    • Adjustable front and side straps
    • Lightweight
    • Comfortable
    Cons
    • No instructions
    • Valve leaks
    • Straps don’t get tight

    9. RevX- Thermal Insulated Hydration Pack

    RevX- Thermal Insulated Hydration Pack

The RevX- Thermal Insulated Hydration Pack is a water-resistant pack that uses durable polyester to keep out the water while remaining comfortable. It has an insulated 2-liter bladder that will help keep your water cold for more than five hours at a time, and a breathable back pad lifts the fluid off your back so it can breathe. It also features a removable velcro that will help keep you safe in low-light situations.

While we were using the RevX- Thermal Insulated Hydration Pack, we found it impossible to keep the shoulder straps in place, and they were continuously slipping off our shoulders. The polyester material was comfortable, but it rips easily, and we had small holes in just a few uses. The zippers are also very flimsy and did not move smoothly through the zipping range. These zippers are likely to develop more severe issues in the future.

    Pros
    • Two-liter bladder
    • Water-resistant polyester material
    • Keeps water cold for more than five hours
    • Removable velcro reflector
    • Breathable back pad
    Cons
    • Shoulder straps slip off
    • Material rips
    • Zippers are low-quality

Buyer’s Guide – Finding the Best Hydration Packs for a Spartan Race

Let’s look at some of the most important things you need to consider when choosing a hydration pack.

    Bladder Size

This is one of the biggest things you need to look at when choosing a hydration pack for the Spartan race. Having enough fluid is vital to completing the race. We recommend getting the largest bladder that you can fit comfortably on your body. Most of the brands on our list provide you with a 2-liter bladder, which should be suitable for most people.

    Design

Another essential thing to look at when choosing a hydration pack for the Spartan race is how it fits against your body. Spartan races have many obstacles, and you don’t want your pack to get hung up or prevent you from completing a task. We recommend a hydration pack that forms to the body instead of the backpack style.

    Extra Features

The Spartan race is one time you don’t want a lot of additional features built into your hydration pack. You are unlikely to need to carry a lot of extra equipment with you, so pockets and zippers will only serve to get in the way. If you are going to use the same hydration pack to train that you will use for the race, extra pockets can come in handy to hold hour phone, etc., but you still want to keep the experience as real as possible.
