Below are a few things you should consider before making your final RV ladder decision.
What Type of RV Ladder Do You Need?
There are several types of RV ladders, including folding, retractable, bunk bed, and stationary ladders. Some RV ladders, like the stationary ladder, are made to be attached in place and stay there, while others are meant to use anywhere you need them around your RV, including inside and outside. RV ladders for bunk beds are made just for getting in and out of bunk beds and aren’t suitable for climbing to your RV’s roof, but foldable, extendable ladders will do it easily.
The choice you make needs to be based on what you want your RV ladder to do for you and how you plan to use it. If you need it for a bunk bed, your choice will be limited to bunk bed ladders. A stationary, attached ladder will be your best choice if it’s solely for accessing your RVs roof. For anything else, an extension or collapsible ladder will likely be your best choice. Or, you might go with a step stool ladder for use inside your RV. There are two kinds, a-frame and straight, so make sure you know which one you need most before buying.
The Weight of the RV Ladder
If you buy an RV ladder made to be attached in one place (stationary) and never used anywhere else, the weight doesn’t really matter. On the other hand, if you plan to use your RV ladder in and around your RV for many different tasks, buying one that doesn’t weigh a lot is crucial (especially if you’re a small person). One of the bigger drawbacks of a retractable extension RV ladder is that the steps, or rungs, are often quite narrow. For smaller people with small feet, that might not be a problem, but if you have big feet, it might make climbing up and down awkward. The Materials
Most RV ladders are made from aluminum with some steel and rubber parts. That said, there are several thicknesses of aluminum. You may run into trouble if you purchase an RV ladder made of thin aluminum and try to carry heavy objects to your RV’s roof. Powder-coated steel parts are also a better choice when buying an RV ladder, as they will withstand the weather with fewer problems and breakdowns. Yes, thicker aluminum and steel parts will add some weight. However, you won’t be carrying your RV ladder often and can always ask for help carrying it. For our money, a sturdier RV ladder is better than a lightweight ladder if you’re going to use it for heavier tasks.
