Streamers are fun party favors that can make a room look livelier, but many people struggle to hang them correctly for maximum effect. If this sounds like your situation, keep reading as we list several different methods that you can use to hang streamers correctly to help improve the appearance of any celebration.
The 5 Ways to Hang Streamers
1. Streamer Backdrop
Tools and materials: | Masking tape, invisible tape, pencil, streamers |
The Streamer Backdrop is a great way to hang streamers, as it makes a great background for a photo and is easy to build.
- Use a ruler and a pencil to measure and lightly mark the wall where you want the top of the streamers to be. Make sure it’s several inches above everyone’s head so you won’t see the top in photographs. You also want to ensure that it is wide enough that you don’t see the sides.
- With the wall marked, put a long piece of masking tape in the same place, leaving the sticky side out. You can accomplish this by using invisible tape on the ends and in the middle to keep it in place.
- At one end of the masking tape, attach the end of the streamer, unroll it to the floor, and cut it.
- Place the new end right next to the other one, and repeat Step 3 until the streamers go all the way across the tape. Alternate streamer colors if you need something more colorful.
- Secure the bottom with a long streamer that you hold in place with invisible tape to prevent the streamers from moving while you take pictures.
- Call people to line up for photographs!
2. Crepe Streamer Canopy
Tools and materials: | Staple gun, hula hoop or large ring, streamers |
In this project, a large ring and multiple streamers create a large attractive canopy. You can place it in the center of the room near the ceiling. The streamers will move out in all directions toward the walls.
- Place the hula hoop or large ring on a table or flat surface so you can work with it.
- Slide the end of the crepe streamer under the ring and fold it over so you can staple it to itself, securing the streamer to the end of the ring.
- Unroll the streamer to the desired length and cut. We recommend cutting it slightly larger than you think that you need, so you can trim it as you put it up. It’s better to have streamers that are too long than too short.
- Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the streamers go around the ring with no large gaps.
- Attach the ring to the ceiling in the center of the room. Many people use the light fixture and yarn or cotton rope to make it secure.
- Grab one of the streamer legs, pull it to the nearest wall, and attach it near the ceiling with a piece of invisible tape.
- Repeat Step 6 until you attach all the streamers.
- Enjoy your canopy!
3. Hanging Streamers
Tools and materials: | Invisible tape, streamers |
- Tape the end of a streamer over a doorway and across the ceiling using invisible tape.
- Unroll the streamer to a suitable length, and cut.
- Repeat Step 2 until a suitable number of streamers are hanging.
4. Draping Streamers
Tools and materials: | Invisible tape, streamers |
- Tape the end of your streamer to the wall near the corner at about eye height with invisible tape.
- Unroll the streamer so it hangs down, hold it to create a U on the wall, and stick tape right where your finger is to keep it in place.
- Repeat Step 2 to continue the pattern until you reach the other corner of the wall.
- Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to add more draping streamers above and below the original for a more festive appearance.
5. Wrapping Streamers
Tools and materials: | Invisible tape, streamers |
- Wrap streamers around your fence, banister, railing, and other objects, holding them in place with invisible tape.
Additional Tips and Tricks
- Try to choose streamer colors that are appropriate for the event, to have a cohesive theme.
- Don’t hang your streamers too early, especially if you live in a humid environment, as they can start to sag and won’t look as nice.
- Alternately fold your streamers in 1-inch intervals to give them a crinkled appearance that might be just right for the occasion.
- Fold and cut your streamers to create unique designs in the center that can help them stand out.
Summary
Hanging streamers is not difficult. For many occasions, you will only need to hang, drape, or wrap the streamers, which only requires a pair of scissors and invisible tape to stick them to the wall and create a festive appearance. For bigger events, the Streamer Backdrop is easy to make and will help you capture amazing photographs during the event, and the Crepe Streamer Canopy will leave no doubt that a celebration is occurring.
