When you’re in the market for a new SUV, you already know it is not going to hold its full value once you drive it off the dealership lot. But unless you plan on driving your SUV forever, you’ll want to resell it eventually. And whenever that time comes, you want to be able to get as much back for your vehicle as possible.
That’s why it is a good idea to figure out what SUVs hold their value the most before you purchase one. We’ve highlighted 12 different SUVs that do a great job holding their value through the years for you here.
The 12 SUVs That Hold Their Value
1. Toyota 4Runner
SUV Size Class: | Compact SUV |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 9.6 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 46.3 to 47.2/88.8 to 89.7 cubic feet |
Few brands hold their value quite like Toyota, so it’s no surprise to see one of their SUVs on our list. Their 4Runner is a compact SUV that offers a ton of different options, meaning there’s quite a bit for you to pick from.
It also sits an impressive 9.6 inches off the ground, giving you more off-road capabilities than most other compact SUVs. Once you add in how reliable Toyota vehicles are it’s really no surprise that the 4Runner does a great job holding its value.
2. Subaru Crosstrek
SUV Size Class:: | Subcompact |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 7.9 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 20.8/55.3 cubic feet |
One vehicle manufacturer that is constantly finding all of its vehicles on the list of those that hold their value the best is Subaru. Their Crosstrek is a much smaller subcompact SUV, but if you don’t need a large SUV that’s not really a problem.
It still sits 7.9 inches off the ground, and it provides more storage space than most sedans. And most importantly for this list, no matter where you look the Crosstrek is holding its value year after year.
3. Subaru Forester
SUV Size Class:: | Compact |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 8.7 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 26.9 to 28.9/69.1 to 74.2 cubic feet |
We told you that Subaru vehicles hold their value well! That’s how Subaru can have two SUVs right in our top three. The Forester is a step up in size compared to the Crosstrek, but as a compact SUV, it’s still not all that large.
It does sit a little higher off the ground though at 8.7 inches, and they all offer a bit more storage space. Just keep in mind that the exact trim level you go with will determine the exact amount of storage space you get with the Forester.
4. Honda CR-V
SUV Size Class:: | Compact |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 7.8 or 8.2 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 39.3/76.5 cubic feet |
Honda is another top-notch vehicle manufacturer that consumers consistently love and go back to. They make reliable vehicles packed full of safety features, making them outstanding daily drivers and family vehicles.
With all that in mind, it’s pretty easy to see why the Honda CR-V constantly has a higher resale value. It’s a perfect fit in the Honda lineup, and it’s a popular SUV year after year.
5. Toyota Highlander (Hybrid)
SUV Size Class:: | Mid-size |
Seating Capacity: | 7 or 8 |
Ground Clearance: | 8 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 16/84.3 cubic feet |
In a world with rapidly rising fuel costs, it makes sense that a hybrid SUV would be a hot commodity. That’s certainly the case with the Toyota Highlander. It’s a mid-size SUV with a hybrid drivetrain from one of the most reliable auto manufacturers in the world.
It’s also the first SUV on our list that has a seating capacity for more than five people, so if you have a larger family, the Toyota Highlander can make a great option.
6. GMC Yukon
SUV Size Class:: | Full-size |
Seating Capacity: | 7 or 8 |
Ground Clearance: | 8 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 25.5/122.9 cubic feet |
As the first full-sized SUV to make our list, the GMC Yukon is an excellent value if you’re looking for a larger SUV. This is especially true since most full-sized SUVs don’t hold their value nearly as well as the smaller options.
Finally, when you’re looking at the storage space, don’t let the smaller 25.5 cubic feet of storage space fool you. This is the storage space behind the third row. If you fold down the second and third rows you open up a massive 122.9 cubic feet of storage space.
7. Kia Telluride
SUV Size Class:: | Midsize |
Seating Capacity: | 7 or 8 |
Ground Clearance: | 8.4 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 21/87 cubic feet |
The Kia Telluride is a more surprising entry on our list, but there’s no denying the consistently high resale value. It’s a midsize SUV that can seat either seven or eight people depending on the seating configuration you go with.
This makes it a great choice for families that need the extra seats but don’t want to pay more for a full-size SUV. It’s a popular SUV choice, and that’s why the Telluride holds its value so well each year.
8. Volvo XC40
SUV Size Class:: | Subcompact |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 8.3 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 16/57.5 cubic feet |
If you don’t mind a smaller SUV, the Volvo XC40 is an option that does a great job holding its value. It’s a subcompact SUV with a lot less storage space compared to other SUV options, but it’s extremely reliable and comfortable.
It also sits 8.3 inches off the ground, so you get a great view while driving. It might not be the SUV that holds its value the best, but it does a lot better than many other options.
9. Ford Bronco
SUV Size Class:: | Midsize |
Seating Capacity: | 4 or 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 8.3, 8.4, or 11 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 22.4 to 38.3/52.3 to 83 cubic feet |
Ford stopped producing the Bronco in 1996, but in 2021 they brought it back. And early indications of the rerelease are high, and so are the resale values. While we don’t have a full five-year resale chart to pull from just yet, early indications are that they’ll do well.
There are tons of different Bronco varieties out there, and because of this, you can find a wide range of ground clearances and storage capacities. But this also means you can find exactly what you want when you’re shopping for one.
10. Mercedes-Benz GLB
SUV Size Class:: | Compact |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 7.9 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 22/62 cubic feet |
The Mercedes-Benz GLB is the first “luxury” SUV to make our list, but the GLB is one of Mercedes’s lower-priced vehicle options. It’s a compact SUV with enough seats for five people, and if you want all the luxury features of a Mercedes you can upgrade to a higher trim level and still get them.
Just keep in mind that the more features you add on, the less it holds its value overall. It’ll still be worth more than a lower-priced option, but it won’t hold quite the same percentage of value.
11. Range Rover Velar
SUV Size Class:: | Compact |
Seating Capacity: | 5 |
Ground Clearance: | 7.7 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 34.4/70.1 cubic feet |
While the Velar isn’t Range Rover’s top-selling vehicle, it is the one that holds its value the best. It’s a compact SUV that sits 7.7 inches off the ground. That’s on the lower and smaller side of things for a Range Rover, but the smaller size is part of the reason it holds its value so well.
If you haven’t taken the time to look into the Velar before and you want a compact SUV, you should.
12. Lexus LX
SUV Size Class:: | Full-size |
Seating Capacity: | 4, 5, or 7 |
Ground Clearance: | 7.9 inches |
Storage Capacity:: | 11 to 46/41 to 71 cubic feet |
If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV and you want it to hold its value well, the Lexus LX is a great choice. While typically a luxury vehicle doesn’t hold its value all that well, the Lexus LX really bucks that trend.
When you’re picking out a Lexus LX there are a lot of options to pick from. That’s why you can get an LX that only seats four or five people, or you can get a full third row and seat up to seven. It’s also why there’s such a large disparity in the overall storage capacity.
Conclusion
While every SUV is going to lose some of its value each year, now that you know which ones hold their value the best, you can go shopping with confidence. Any of the SUVs on our list will hold their value pretty well for an SUV, putting you in great shape when you want to upgrade to something new.
